she is slipping, slipping, sinking into the water
higher and higher under a hedge
i know she can't stay forever, eternal mother
i'm pushing the leaves and branches
running on the roots but the trees are
scabs under my feet

running to find her, slipping under
and i called and i cried
it wasn't metamorphosis
iridescent wings
sprouting in the green green water
in the swirling black leaves
and the sun sends shafts of light green glow in the water

water of life and death and growing dragonflies
and i'm waiting, waiting for her

slipping
slipping
sinking
